Chevrolet Corvette
The Chevrolet Corvette was designed by sports-car lover and GM designer Harley Earl in 1951. The first Corvette was introduced to the public at the 1953 Motorama car show. The body was fiberglass, while underneath the hood were standard Chev parts, including an inline six-cylinder truck engine, Powerglide automatic transmission, and drum brakes.
Sales of the Corvette were lackluster, probably due to the lack of power and manual transmission that sports car enthusiasts demanded, and the project was nearly shelved until it acquired a V8 and three-speed manual transmission.
For collectors, the first generation of Corvettes are the most sought after. There were only 300 Corvettes produced in 1953. 1954 offered new color choices while the 1955 model introduced the V8 engine. The body was redesigned in 1956, and a fuel injection system was added in 1957. The 1958 Corvette was the flashiest Corvette ever built, with lots of chrome and quad headlights. Over the next few years, the Corvette sparkled less on the outside, but grew in horsepower on the inside.
1963 began the era of the Sting Ray, designed by Larry Shinoda. The era induded the first coupe version of the Corvette, the introduction of disc brakes, and a big block engine option.
The third generation of the Corvette, the “Shark”, resulted the first Indy Pace Car for the model in 1977. In 1980 the body of the Corvette was redesigned to reduce drag, and a few years later a new cross-fire injection engine was introduced.
The fourth generation Corvette began production in 1983 as an ‘84 model. Production problems stopped GM from releasing an ‘83 model. The Corvette was chosen as the Indy Pace Car again in 1986. It was the first pace car fast enough to page the Indy 500 in stock form.
The fifth generation Corvettes went on sale in 1997. These models were drastically changed, and much improved in all aspects, from the previous generation. The new Corvette had a hydroformed box frame, a trans-axle rear transmission, and an all-new LS1 engine.
The sixth and current generation of Corvette (C6) increased fuel economy, improved steering, a new L3 engine, and all new body work.
Whichever generation you prefer, the Chevrolet Corvette is a brand that has endured for more than 50 years, with thousands of enthusiasts buying for love and investment.
